Fasting is the fourth of the Five Pillars of Islam. The arabic word siy-yaam (root : sawm) which is found in the Koran has been twisted by the mullahs to mean fasting – an abstaining from food and drink during the daylight hours in the “month of Ramadhan”.
The following is adapted from Aidid Safar the author of the book “Mental Bondage”. Siyyam does not mean fasting by abstaining from food and drink at all. Here are the verses from the Koran to prove this:
19:25-26 And shake towards you the palm tree, it will drop ripe fruits. So eat and drink (wa kuli wa ashrabee) and be happy and when you see anyone, then say, "I have pledged to the Merciful a siyyaam; therefore I shall not talk to anyone today.
This is the Koranic narrative of Mary and baby Jesus. Here Mary is described as performing the siy-yam. Yet she was not abstaining from food and drink.
On the contrary she was told to shake a date palm and eat its fruits. She was also told to ‘eat and drink’ (wa kuli wa ashrabee). This was not abstaining from food at all. Mary was eating and drinking during her siy-yam.
The siy-yam enjoined upon Mary was NOT to talk to anyone. From here we understand that the word siy-yam means to control or restrain oneself from doing something. To control oneself. Siyyam does not mean to go without food and water, at any time at all.
Note the words ‘wa kuli wa ashrabee’ (eat and drink). This phrase “eat and drink” appears seven times in the Koran (see 2:60, 2:187, 7:31, 19:26, 52:19, 69:24, 77:43).
Nowhere in the Koran can we find the words “DO NOT eat and DO NOT drink”. There is no such thing in the Koran.
The Creator does not create a stomach for the human being which should be fed about three times a day and then say “Do not eat and do not drink”. That would go against the nature of the Creation.
Year in and out, the followers of the mullahs torture themselves by going hungry and thirsty in the ninth month of the fallacious mullah calender – which they call Ramadhan.
The mullahs say this month-long ritual of abstaining from food and water from dawn to dusk in the so called month of 'ramadan' is ordained in the Koran.
The ritual is based upon the same arabic word "siy-yam", which has been interpreted, translated and defined as not eating and drinking. A detailed look at the relevant verses shows heavy manipulation and misinterpretation by the mullahs.
First here is a rendering of the mullah version of some relevant verses by Abdullah Yusuf Ali :
2:183 O ye who believe! Fasting (siyyaam) is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self-restraint, -
2:184 (Fasting) for a fixed number of days (ayyaman mawdudatin); but if any of you is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed number (Should be made up) from days later. For those who can do it (With hardship), is a ransom, the feeding of one that is indigent. But he that will give more, of his own free will, - it is better for him. And it is better for you that ye fast, if ye only knew.
2:185 Ramadhan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur'an, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (Between right and wrong). So every one of you who is present (at his home) during that month should spend it in fasting (sum-hoo), but if any one is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period (should be made up) by days later. God intends every facility for you; He does not want to put to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period, and to glorify Him in that He has guided you; and perchance ye shall be grateful.
2:186 When My servants ask thee concerning Me, I am indeed close (to them): I listen to the prayer of every suppliant when he calleth on Me: Let them also, with a will, Listen to My call, and believe in Me: That they may walk in the right way.
2:187 Permitted to you, on the night of the fasts (siy-yam), is the approach to your wives (rafaatha ila nisaa). They are your garments and ye are their garments. God knoweth what ye used to do secretly among yourselves; but He turned to you and forgave you; so now associate with them, and seek what God Hath ordained for you, and eat and drink, until the white thread of dawn appear to you distinct from its black thread; then complete your fast (siy-yaam) Till the night appears; but do not associate with your wives while ye are in retreat in the mosques. Those are Limits (set by) God: Approach not nigh thereto. Thus doth God make clear His Signs to men: that they may learn self-restraint.
A few points to note. In 2:184 the words ‘ayyaman mawdudatin’ is translated as ‘certain number of days’ or ‘specified days’ or a fixed number of days.
‘Ayyaman’ means days or time. Mawdudatin means counted or reckoned.
As we have seen already, siyyaam does not mean fasting by abstaining from food and drink. And ramadhan (2:185) is not the name of a month. The word ramadhan means intense heat, an intensity, an extreme condition, the dry heat of summer.
If ‘ramadhan’ means the hot intense months of summer then the mullahs fasting should only take place in the summer months in every country. But this is not the case now. The month of the fast can even fall in the winter months. This is an obvious contradiction with the "hot months of summer".
The mullahs say that fasting shall fall on a specific month ie the month of Ramadhan. Ramadhan refers to the hot periods. But the fact is the mullahs month of Ramadhan is not specific to a particular time in the year. Their unworkable lunar calendar moves their month of Ramadhan throughout the year, including winter. You cannot have Ramadhan (hot month) in winter.
Also the summer months fall at different times of the year in the countries of the northern and southern hemisphere. This means fasting in the hot month or ramadhan cannot fall in the same month throughout the world. So if ramadhan is a month in the year (ie the hot months) the mullahs fasting month is already in serious breach of the Koran.
The word shahru which is translated as month is rooted in shahr which means something that is illuminated, made manifest or becomes clearly obvious. The full moon is considered a ‘shahr’ or fully illuminated. Hence the use of the word shahru to indicate ‘month’.
Rafaatha ila nisaa in 2:187 is translated by some as ‘sexual intercourse with your wives’. Rafaatha literally means ‘to engage’ or ‘to commerce’. The word ‘ila’ means towards. "Rafaatha ila nisaa" means ‘engage towards your women’ or engage with your women.
Taking ‘shahru’ as something that is manifest or illuminated and ramadhan as something that indicates extreme heat, an intensity or severity the same verses are rendered as follows :
2:183 O you trusted people, self control (siyyaam) is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you are winners.
2:184 A few days for reckoning, for those who are ill or travelling the reckoning shall be on other days. And for those who find difficulty in doing it, substitute with the feeding of a poor person. Hence, whoever works goodness, so it would do him good, and that you control yourself is better if you know.
[2:185] When the Koran is sent down, it becomes manifestly intense (shahru ramadan), a guidance for the people and explanations from the guidance and the criterion. Therefore whoever amongst you experiences these manifestations (shahida minkum shahra) you shall control yourself (fal-ya-sumhoo). And those who are ill or travelling they shall reckon from other days (faiddatun min ayyamin ukhra). Allah wishes convenience for you, and He does not impose hardship upon you; and so that you shall fulfil your own reckoning, and you shall glorify Allah for guiding you, so that you are appreciative.
2:186 And when My servants ask you about Me, I am always near, I respond to the call of any caller who calls on Me. Therefore, they shall respond to Me, and be faithful to Me, that they may be guided.
2:187 You are permitted during the nights when you restrain yourselves (siyyaam) to indulge your women. They are your confidantes, and you are their confidants. Allah knows that you have betrayed yourselves, and therefore He redeemed you and pardoned you. Henceforth, mix with them, and seek you of what Allah has decreed for you, and eat and drink (wa kuluu wa ashraboo) until you can understand this as clearly as the white thread from the black thread at dawn. Restrain yourselves till the night. And you shall not mix with them whilst involved in your places of submission. These are the limits of Allah; therefore you shall not breach them. Allah thus clarifies His revelations for the people, that they become observant.
There is no fasting by not eating food and not drinking from dawn to dusk anywhere in all these verses.
There is no command at all that says DO NOT EAT AND DO NOT DRINK anywhere in these verses. Instead the positive command ‘eat and drink’ (wa kuluu wa ashraboo) appears here again. ‘Wa kuluu wa ashraboo’ seems to be a command to appreciate life and to be happy. Similar to the saying ‘eat, drink and be happy’.
In the Koran, a negative command or a prohibition usually begins clearly with "You shall not", "You shall stop...", "You shall refrain from..." or ‘You shall not come near’. In this case there are no clearly discernible commands in the verses which say DO NOT EAT AND DO NOT DRINK.
Please note that in 2:187 the words “thumma atimmoo al siyyaama ilal layli
"...then fulfill your self control towards the night (ilal laili)..."
This means the "siyyaam" is to be performed at night as well. The words day or daytime are not even mentioned anywhere here.
This means that if the mullahs insist on fasting by not eating and not drinking then they must “fast” right into the night without stop. But the mullahs fasting ends in the evening at sunset. This too does not tally with verse.
The current mullah fasting for one whole month is also inconsistent with the mullahs own understanding of "ayyaaman ma'duudatin..." (2:184) as 'a few specific days'.
The mullahs insisting that "syahru ramadhaan" is the month of Ramadan of the Hijrah calendar will pose a further reconciliation problem with "ayyaaman ma'duudatin". Because it will then mean "fasting for a few specific days in Ramadan”. How does ‘a few specific days’ (ayyaaman mawduudatin) translate into a full month of fasting?
Fasting was a pagan arab tradition that predates Islam. Here is some background material written by a Bangladeshi writer about the pagan or jahiliyah arabs and their fasting rituals:
Ramadan was a non-Muslim pagan Arab festival
The difference between pre-Islamic Ramadan and Islamic Ramadan is, pre-Islamic Ramadan was practiced by a Pagan tribe in Arabia, and Islamic Ramadan is practiced by Muslims all over the world.
During Ramadan, Pagan Arabs used to abstain from food, water, sexual contact etc. Muslims practice the same Pagan Ramadan rituals.
It is a well-known fact that Islam adapted the Pagan practice of fasting. There is a Hadith in Sahih Bukhari that mentions the ritual.
Bukhari 5:58:172 – Narrated Aisha: ‘Ashura was a day on which the tribe of Quraish used to fast in the pre-lslamic period of ignorance. The Prophet also used to fast on this day. So when he migrated to Medina, he fasted on it and ordered (the Muslims) to fast on it. When the fasting of Ramadan was enjoined, it became optional for the people to fast or not to fast on the day of Ashura.’
So the fasting for Ashura (10th of Muharram) originated from a Quraish Pagan practice.
Many non-Islamic Pagan rituals are now known as Islamic rituals. The pagan crescent moon: the symbol of the moon god was stolen by the mullahs. Muslims now begin their Ramadan fasting after seeing a crescent moon in the sky.
Fasting is again something the mullahs have copied from the biblical and jewish teachings.
Yom Kippur (Judaism): The Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year in Judaism. It is observed with fasting and prayer on the 10th day of Tishri, the 7th month in the Hebrew calendar.
Lent (Christianity) : A 40-day period of penitence and fasting, Lent is the season of preparation before Easter. Ash Wednesday marks the start of the season of Lent. Denominations across Christianity observe Lent in different ways.
These are pagan rituals. There is no fasting in the Koran and Islam.
